Magnetic Island is a tropical haven just eight kilometres off the beach at Townsville, 700 km North of the Tropic of Capricorn, a port for trips to the Great Barrier Reef.
The island has five small townships or villages and 23 natural beaches. It is large, nearly 75 000 km2, and three-quarters of it is a National Park.
Magnetic Island is a public area like the mainland, not controlled by any one tourist resort. Therefore visitors can move freely and live in any style, in hotels, B&B, back-packers, camping and self-contained houses or apartments.

We enjoyed our stay at Beachcomber 3 so much, we couldn't wait to get back the following year. The position is perfect, with shops, bus, eating places and swimming within easy walking distance. The beach which is just handy to Beachcomber must be one of the most serene places we know. It is just metres away through a glade of teatrees and palms. We can sit on the beautiful sand and listen to the birds and the gentle lapping of the water.
As the sun goes down the lights of Townsville across the Bay begin to appear. This year we will take our car across as the unit has its own carport. Can't wait!
